Diane is the kind of woman who’ll greet you with a big, genuine smile and do everything to make you feel comfortable. When you first meet her, you’re instantly charmed. She remembers your coffee order after hearing it once. She sends thoughtful birthday cards with handwritten notes.
She’s the kind of woman you’d want to be friends with because she’s what you call a “girl’s girl.” She’s the kind of woman who’s always there for her loved ones. She’s kind. Nice. Caring.
But when it comes to her son? She’s a whole new person.

“Josh always loved my chicken pot pie recipe,” she’d announce while rearranging the dishes in our kitchen cabinet. “You should really learn to make it properly.”
She is one of those women who thinks being a “boy mom” gives her permanent access to her son’s entire existence. And by extension, mine too.
I met Josh at the marketing firm where we both worked. He was the quiet creative director who surprised me with his dry humor during late-night campaign preparations.

After our third coffee break that somehow stretched into dinner, I knew he was special. Six months later, we were engaged, and I was happier than I’d ever been.
“You proposed already?” Diane had said when Josh called to share the news. I was sitting right beside him and heard her voice clear as day through the phone. “Don’t you think that’s a bit rushed? Remember what happened with Sarah from college?”
Josh just laughed it off.
“Mom, this is different,” he said. “Kiara is different.”

“You’re carrying too low. It’s definitely a boy,” Diane would declare, placing her hands on my belly without asking. “Josh was carried exactly the same way.”

None of it backed by medical science, all of it delivered with the confidence of someone who believed raising one child 40 years ago made her an expert.
When Josh and I moved into our first home, she visited the following week without asking.

I opened the door in a robe, mascara under my eyes, and our colicky three-month-old daughter on my hip. The house was a mess with dishes piled in the sink and baby clothes scattered across the living room. I hadn’t showered in two days.
“Oh, I figured you’d be home,” she said, brushing past me into our entryway. “I brought my own cleaner. This place needs some real help.”
That should’ve been my warning.

Since then, Diane’s boundary-crossing became a regular feature in our lives. Like the time she rearranged our living room furniture while we were at work.
“The feng shui was all wrong,” she explained when I came home to find my reading nook completely dismantled. “This arrangement brings better energy for the baby.”
Josh just shrugged when I complained later.
“That’s just Mom being Mom,” he said, as if that explained everything.

Then there was the time she tossed out all the “unhealthy” snacks from our pantry. My secret stash of chocolate-covered pretzels, the spicy chips I’d been craving since pregnancy, and even Josh’s protein bars. All gone.
“You’ll thank me later,” she insisted. “Processed food is basically poison.”
But the final straw? Walking in on me breastfeeding in our bedroom.
“Oh, don’t mind me,” she said, barely pausing as she placed fresh towels in our en-suite bathroom. “I’ve seen it all before.”

I clutched the nursing cover tighter, feeling violated in what should have been my most private moment.
“Diane,” I said, “I’d appreciate a knock next time.”
She looked puzzled, as if the concept was entirely foreign to her. “We’re all family here,” she replied breezily.
It was too much.
A month ago, at our regular Sunday brunch, she dropped it casually between bites of lemon scone.

I nearly choked on my coffee. The audacity of the request (read: the demand) left me speechless for a moment.
“Excuse me?” I finally managed.
“For emergencies,” she explained, as if I were slow to understand a perfectly reasonable request. “For when I drop things off. For being part of the family.” She reached across the table to pat my hand. “It’s not like I’d misuse it.”

Josh looked at me. I looked at him. He wisely shoved another bite of scone into his mouth and stayed out of it.
But Diane? She wouldn’t let it go.
“Every woman in my bridge group has access to her grandkids and her son’s house,” she continued, stirring another sugar cube into her already-sweet tea. “Phyllis even has her own bedroom at her son’s place. Is there something you’re hiding from me?”
The question hung in the air between us.

What was I hiding?
Only my sanity. My autonomy. My right to live in my own home without wondering if my mother-in-law might appear at any moment to critique my housekeeping, parenting, or the way I loaded the dishwasher.
On the drive home, Josh finally spoke.
“Maybe we should just give her a key,” he suggested tentatively. “It might make life easier.”
I stared out the window, watching suburban houses blur past, each one a sanctuary I suddenly envied.

After weeks of texts asking, “Have you made a copy yet?” and phone calls reminding me how “normal families share keys,” Diane finally wore us down.
Or rather, she wore Josh down, and by extension, me.
“It’s just easier to give her what she wants,” Josh sighed one night after his mother’s third call that day. “You know how she gets.”
I did know. And that’s when we came up with an idea.
The following weekend, at our usual Sunday brunch, I handed Diane a small gift box with a ribbon on top.

Inside, nestled on a bed of tissue paper, lay a shiny brass key.
“Oh!” Her eyes lit up as she lifted it out. She looked smug. Triumphant. Like she’d won something.
“This is what good DILs do,” she said, pocketing it like a trophy. “You won’t regret this, Kiara.”
But I knew better.
Fast forward to the following weekend.
Josh and I were out on a rare brunch date, enjoying our eggs benedict and mimosas, when my phone buzzed with a Ring camera alert.

There she was. At our front door. Key in hand. Trying to unlock it.
Jiggle. Twist. Try again. Nothing.
She bent down, inspecting the doorknob. Looked confused. Then annoyed. She tried again, more forcefully this time, as if the lock might yield to her determination.
I answered through the camera, sipping my coffee.
“Everything okay, Diane?”
She squinted into the lens, startled.
“The key’s not working,” she huffed. “Did you give me the wrong one?”

The silence was new territory in our relationship with Diane. She had always been quick with responses.
I didn’t text her. I didn’t call her. I wanted to give her time to understand what she’d done and what we wanted from her.

But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be okay.”
King Charles and Kate Middleton were both praised for revealing their respective cancer diagnoses. Following Kate’s announcement, visits to the NHS website’s cancer information page increased by nearly five times, and Macmillan Cancer Support experienced a similar surge around Charles’ announcement.\

In an interview with GB News, author Alexander Larman argued that the conspiracies surrounding Kate Middleton showed that the world is “obsessed by the health of the royal family,” and “look to them so set an example.”
Moreover, Larman claimed that Kate stayed quiet because of Prince William.
“The trolls have carried on to this day. But one thing that’s very interesting is if you look at the difference between the responses,” the author said. “Buckingham Palace came forward very quickly and gave a fairly candid idea of what’s happening with Charles with his illness, and Kensington Palace didn’t.”
“I think that’s because Prince William is much more into the vein of never complain, never explain, which was his great grandfather’s motto, and has always served the Royal Family well,” Alexander Larman continued.
“But it doesn’t hold up in 2024 because you’ve got to allow the idea the information is going to get out into the public, whether you like it or not.”
Prince William has juggled his responsibilities to the Crown and being a father and husband for months. He’s been praised for handling the situation, but experts have argued that he’s also been through a tough time.
On April 18, about a month after Kate’s cancer diagnosis was announced, he returned to royal duty as he visited a food distribution charity.
According to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, the “well-timed” outing sent a hidden message that things are returning to normality.
“Royals realize that every single thing they do sends a message in one way or another. It wasn’t just a question of appearing with George at an occasion that was enjoyable,” he told The Sun.
“It was a question of sending a signal that it was business as usual – as far as that was reasonable to be expected. If Catherine had been there, it would have been fantastic, but no one is expecting that. People wouldn’t expect that after her video message, which I think is the bravest ever on a health issue by a public figure in Britain.”
King Charles could ‘replace’ Kate Middleton with another royal family member this summer
Moreover, Richard Fitzwilliams said that William’s appearance at the food distribution charity also sends a message that not only him but also Kate are on their way to resuming royal duties.
“We know William is going back to royal duties shortly. The royal family obviously needs him. This was an important appearance, simply in the sense that it was what one would call normal. Obviously, with the royal family very little is actually normal at the moment. He is clearly looking after the children as far as feasible. I mean, it’s it’s a burden William has. It sent this message that things some things are going on, more or less as normal,” Fitzwilliams told The Sun.

At least, that’s according to a Daily Mail source, who claims King Charles is looking to other royal family members, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, to take her place in the many critical royal events coming up this summer.
“They’ve got a busy diary coming up, and they need to widen the family at social events. You’ve got a whole week of Ascot. You have four garden parties. You’ve got Trooping the Colour, and you’ve got a state visit before you even start on other things,” the source said.
The source added that King Charles is looking to “bring in some fresh blood,” as he believes they’ve “grown into very sensible, lovely women” who could be a great asset for the royal family.

Even though William has shared that Kate and their children are “doing well” despite the challenging situation, everyone isn’t convinced. Designer Amaia Arrieta, who’s worked closely with the Wales family in the past, told the Telegraph that things aren’t what they might seem.
“I’m heartbroken at the moment. I think they are going through hell,” Arrieta told the Telegraph. “I hope they will be back. It’s really personal.”
As mentioned, Amaia Arrieta has worked closely with the Wales family, mainly sourcing clothing for royal photos.
“Dressing the royals gives me so much pride, I really do care about how they look,” she added, “It’s often a very tight deadline. We would do anything for them… the children always look amazing in the end.”
Prince William says Kate and their children were “upset” over travel decision
Prince William has been back on royal duty for about a month. Kate Middleton generally would have joined him for many outings, but that won’t happen for a while, considering her recovery phase.
However, even though the Wales family knows how things are, it appears that Kate and her children still don’t appreciate everything William does. One of those things happened days ago, as Prince William visited the Isles of Scilly.
The archipelago is located off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, over which William became the Duke when Charles became king in September 2022. During his two-day tour, he made one stop at St. Mary’s Community Hospital, where he chatted with an administrator, Tracy Smith.
“I asked William about his wife Kate and he said: ‘She’s doing well, thanks.’ And I suggested they might like to come for a visit and bring the children,” Smith recalled the meeting as reported by several news outlets.
However, it appeared that Kate and the children didn’t appreciate his decision to travel to the Isles of Scilly alone.
As per Express, William said the trip had “upset” his wife and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
He said they were “upset I’m here without them” as he praised the glorious weather.
“My family are very upset I’m here without them. The children will kill me if I don’t go home later,” William said.
William’s claim about his family was undoubtedly humorous, but it most likely tells a bigger story. According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, the fact that he was away for two nights shows the public that things are going the right way.
“I’ve no doubt that Catherine’s parents will be staying with her, but even so it must be a step in the right direction. Hopefully Catherine is feeling stronger every day and, with the sun now shining, she’ll be able to enjoy the great outdoors which, for her, has always been restorative,” she told OK!.
